Major Changes Ahead in Higher Education Health Care

Colleges and universities are embracing high-deductible health plans (HDHPs), wellness initiatives and prescription drug cost management (Rx) programs.

That’s one key finding from Sibson Consulting’s latest College and University Benefits Study (CUBS). The report details information about benefits plans at more than 450 public and private higher education institutions.

  • Institutions trending toward HDHPs: While the percentage of institutions that offer HDHPs grew explosively over two years, there was a decline in uptake of preferred provider organizations (PPOs) and point-of-service (POS) plans.
  • On-site fitness centers are a clear incentive: Access to an on-site fitness center was the most common of many well initiatives. Weight loss programs and onsite biometric screens are also popular.
  • Further expansion in Rx management programs: Use of mandatory generics programs grew as much as 18% over two years, and step therapy grew by 19%.
