Rewards of Work Study

For more than a decade, Sibson Consulting has focused our Rewards of Work Study around gaining an understanding of how employees feel about their work. What motivates employees? What retains them? What attracts them? These questions have represented the core of what Sibson Consulting considers the "Rewards of Work."

Sibson recently completed its 2009 Rewards of Work Study of American workers. This is the fifth Rewards of Work Study that Sibson has conducted since 1997 to measure how employees rate their total rewards and what motivates them to become and stay engaged. In addition to identifying key drivers of turnover and engagement, the study offers guidance about where employers can re-balance the value exchange with employees, both now and in the future.

Study results show that:

  • Employee engagement is up, as measured by the number of employees who say they understand what to do and are motivated to do it, but it is still below what most employers desire.
  • Employee satisfaction has increased for four out of the five rewards elements measured.
  • Employees in organizations where layoffs have taken place are far less satisfied than are those in other organizations.
  • Millennials (usually defined as those born from the early 1980s to the early 1990s) are much more dissatisfied and disengaged than any other age group.

The study shows that rather than waiting for a stronger economic environment, employers can use 2009 and 2010 to correct any imbalance in the employee value exchange. The results of the 2009 Rewards of Work Study provide important insight into what can and should be done.
