July 2010 Spotlight, "Back to Basics: Reminder about Planning for Current Health Care Coverage"

Abstract

Since late March when the Affordable Care Act, the national health care reform law, was signed, considerable time is being spent on understanding how the health care delivery system will change in the near future. This Spotlight reminds employers to take a step back from looking ahead in order to focus on what they need to do now to plan for the coming year:

  • Request renewals from service providers.
  • Start the budgeting process.
  • Plan for open enrollment.
  • Amend the cafeteria plan.

The Spotlight also notes the following other steps employers may want to consider undertaking in the near term:

  • Continue health-promotion plans and coordinate various sources of coverage.
  • Reexamine coverage for high-cost biotech/specialty and multi-source brand-name drugs.
  • Review stop-loss coverage, if applicable.

The Spotlight concludes by noting possible legal restrictions to be aware of associated with the Affordable Care Act and Mental Health Parity and Addition Equity Act.
