Rick Smith
Senior Vice President, New York

Expertise

Richard V. Smith (Rick) is a Senior Vice President, Principal and Executive Compensation Consultant in Sibson Consulting’s Organizational Effectiveness Practice located in their New York office.

Rick is responsible for the design and implementation of executive compensation and benefits plans. He has extensive experience designing, and implementing reward strategies that define the proper mix of annual and long-term incentives as appropriate to the organization and its culture. Rick reviews and advises on executive employment contracts in light of current practices and individual situations including recommending compensation for outside Directors.  He also advises Compensation Committees and Boards on linking compensation with business strategy and strengthening corporate governance.

Rick previously served as a Director and Executive Compensation Practice Leader at KPMG in their New York office prior to KPMG Rick  served as a Senior Consultant at The Hay Group and a Principal at William M. Mercer Inc.

Rick has 23 years of experience in executive compensation and benefits consulting with assignments to all areas of financial services including commercial and retail banking, insurance, brokerage and securities exchanges.

Additionally, he has extensive experience in the energy, consumer products, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and information technology industries. His assignments have been located throughout the United States, Canada, Middle East and Hong Kong. He has also developed several compensation restructuring plans for companies emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Rick has spoken before several professional organizations, including the Columbia University MBA Alumnae Association panel on executive pay and the National Foreign Trade Council, INC. (NFTC) He also presented at the Conference Board's conference in New York on “The Changing Face of Performance Based Compensation” and taught courses on executive compensation and benefits at the International Federation of Employee Benefits Plans training center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Additionally, Rick has made several guest appearances on Fox, CNBC and Bloomberg television on executive pay. Rick is a member of The Economic Club of New York, The Options Policy Forum, WorldatWork and The Conference Board.

Myrna Hellerman
Senior Vice President, Chicago

Expertise

Ms. Hellerman helps companies improve business results through the design and implementation of innovative, effective, and sustainable people strategies. She frequently serves Executive Leadership Development and Compensation Committees as their independent advisor.

Ms. Hellerman has a particular expertise with the human capital management and governance challenges that are precipitated by a major financial transaction (e.g., IPO, spin-off, merger, private equity buy-out).

Ms. Hellerman has served over 100 publicly traded and privately held organizations from a wide variety of industries, including insurance, brokerage, financial services, real estate, health care, hospitality, retail, technology, and manufacturing.

Examples of typical client engagements include:

  • Ms. Hellerman worked with a global diversified financial services organization to plan and implement its people strategy in anticipation of an IPO. The strategy and underlying plans were regarded as having contributed to investor enthusiasm for the offering and consequently the over-subscription.
  • A major non-US manufacturing company with global operations engaged Ms. Hellerman to design and implement a human resource platform based on leadership competencies that drive value creation. The platform is used for global leadership selection, promotion, performance management, and reward determination.
  • The management and the Compensation Committee of a large specialty retailer collaborated with Ms. Hellerman to revamp the Company’s equity plan and granting practices and to win ISS and shareholder approval.

Professional Background

Prior to joining Sibson in 1994, Ms. Hellerman was the Chief Human Resource Executive for Hyatt Corporation, an international corporation with more than 50,000 employees. At Continental Bank, she was the Vice President responsible for the global compensation and benefits functions. At Hewitt Associates, she led both domestic and international total compensation assignments. Ms. Hellerman’s professional background also includes several faculty appointments.

Education/Professional Designations

Ms. Hellerman received an MBA degree from the University of Chicago, and an MA and a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese from Stanford University. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in science and mathematics from the University of Michigan. She was a Fulbright scholar in Peru and completed studies in Mexico and Argentina. She is a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP).

Professional Affiliations

Ms. Hellerman has served as an elected member of the Board of Directors of The Segal Group, the privately held Delaware corporation which is the parent of Sibson Consulting.

Ms. Hellerman is a member of the Business Advisory Council of the University of Illinois (Chicago).

Ms. Hellerman has served as an officer of the Human Resource Management Association of Chicago, the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, the Council of Personnel Officers and as the Chair of the Pension and Benefits Committee of the American Hotel and Lodging Association and the Chair of the Long-Range Planning Committee of Prevent Child Abuse – Illinois.

Ms. Hellerman has authored articles and commentary published in such publications as Forbes.com, the Handbook of Business Strategy, Human Resource Executive, Financial Executive, and the WorldatWork’s Workspan.

Among the venues at which Ms. Hellerman has been invited to present are: the national and regional conferences of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), WorldatWork, Beyster Institute for Employee Stock Ownership, the Human Resource Planning Society (HRPS) and the National Association of Stock Plan Professionals (NASPP).



David Insler
Senior Vice President, Los Angeles

Expertise

Mr. Insler joined Sibson Consulting in May 2005 as a Senior Vice President in the western region. His primary consulting expertise is in organization effectiveness, executive performance and rewards, and sales force effectiveness.

His experience includes both consulting and corporate roles in middle market as well as Fortune 100 companies. Specific consulting projects include: executive and Board compensation; performance systems design; organizational and human resource strategies; incentive plan design including long-term, annual, sales and employee group incentives; salary management programs; and human resource functional/ operational reviews. Mr. Insler’s work in incentive design runs the continuum from “EVA” or value-based executive compensation to blue collar and knowledge worker productivity/ gainsharing group incentives as well as sales force compensation.

His industry experience includes:

Professional Background

Before joining Sibson, Mr. Insler spent 8 years with Deloitte & Touche Human Capital Consulting and was Principal and Practice Leader for Western Region HR Strategies. During this time, he developed a full-service executive compensation practice serving companies from start-up to Fortune 500, and created the Sales Force Effectiveness service offering. He has been involved in organization effectiveness consulting including the design and implementation of human resource strategies, compensation plans, and performance management processes across a variety of industries for more than 20 years and held progressively responsible corporate positions in these areas for more than 15 years.

Mr. Insler’s corporate experience includes several senior-level human resource roles in financial services, aerospace, electronics and transportation industries. Most recently, he was Vice President – Organization Effectiveness for a leading global medical device company and previously served as Senior Vice President and Director, Compensation and Benefits for Security Pacific Corporation. In the latter role, he was responsible for design and administration of executive compensation, qualified and non-qualified benefit and retirement plans, and design/review of salary and incentive plans for the bank and all subsidiaries and global locations.

He was also responsible for the merger organization and HR integration between Bank of America and Security Pacific. David’s corporate experience includes more than fifteen years in corporate, of which six years were with TRW Electronics & Defense, the largest sector of TRW based in Southern California, where he was Director Compensation & Benefits and managed the sector’s strategic planning process.

Education

Mr. Insler holds a B.A. degree from the Pennsylvania State University. His postgraduate work includes the Bucknell Executive Management Program in Banking and the Southwestern University School of Law.
