CPR for Performance Management

August 3, 2009

"Two critical factors - strong leadership and effective execution - can breathe new life into an organization's performance management process," write David Insler and Robert Conlon in their recent article for Sibson Consulting's Perspectives newsletter.

Sibson's experience with clients has identified strong leadership and effective execution as critical factors in using performance management to improve employee engagement, which helps drive performance and commitment.

Insler and Conlon point out that too many organizations align performance planning and evaluation around pay cycles rather than the business cycle. While this may be acceptable at the non-exempt level, it is not effective for establishing a high-performance culture among professionals, specifically management, whose performance and pay should be closely aligned with business performance expectations and results.

"Leaders must set the stage for effective execution, which is embedded in day-to-day activities, not just forms and systems. For instance, Sibson constructed its Five Conversations Approach to Communicating to achieve an ongoing dialogue between supervisors and employees," say the authors.
