Strategies for Human Resource Leadership During an Economic Downturn

Creating a Healthy Campus: Why it Matters

As a result of employee health issues, health care costs generally consume 5% or more of an institution's operating budget. Thirty percent of the workforce has a chronic condition, and more than half of faculty and staff face multiple health risks. The relatively poor health of the workforce has the potential to undermine an organization's ability to execute its strategy.
Research shows that the communities in which we live have a significant influence on our health, and the workplace is a community where employees spend one third of their waking hours. Recognizing these factors, some forward thinking institutions have taken steps to address both the health and the health care needs of their faculty and staff. They do so by partnering with their faculty and staff on not just health care problems, but also on preventative health care solutions that aim to optimize health and fitness.
