Dr. Butterfield is a human resource professional with over forty years of experience in higher education, including public, land grant, private, research and corporate education both in the United States and abroad.

She has a proven track record in the areas of strategic planning, human resource program development, process improvement, change and reduction management. She also has experience in the fields of human resource management, metrics, health care design and delivery, environmental health and safety, risk management, and planning and management of downsizing in higher education.

Milestones

In higher education, Dr. Butterfield led development of three university strategic plans supported by annual metrics reporting. She introduced and defined the topic of responsibility-based stewardship for organizational and human capital assets; led the HR business ownership installation of a major enterprise system; worked with David Ulrich to interpret his corporate findings and theories of HR "championship" and implemented the results in university organizational and service transformation. Finally, Dr. Butterfield has successfully led strategies for contemporizing and replacing compensation, classification and benefits design.

Professional Background

Dr. Butterfield has depth and breadth of experience as a senior executive in both higher education administration and corporate settings. She has served at some of the country's most prestigious universities, including the role of Chief Human Resources Officer at University of Michigan, Edutrek International, Stanford University, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Education/Training

Dr. Butterfield has a Ph.D. in Education Administration and an MS in education from Southern Illinois University, as well as a BA in Sociology Cum Laude from Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. She is an alumna of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Professional Affiliations/Awards

Dr. Butterfield is a member of the Committee to Visit Human Resources at Harvard University. She received the Kathryn Hansen National CUPA/HR Award for her book, You Can Get There From Here: The Road to Downsizing and Higher Education. In 1998, Dr. Butterfield received the Donald B. Dickason Award, CUPA HR's highest individual national award for lifetime achievement in higher education.

Ms. Butterfield is a published author and speaker. She is the author and/or contributor of three books, including: You Can Get There From Here: The Road to Downsizing and Higher Education, Process and Organizational Redesign; Leading Change in Colleges and Universities and Paving the Way for the 21st Century: The Human Factor in Higher Education Financial Management. She has also led seminars on HR value creation and measurement; high impact personal and professional negotiation skills; and HR and organizational transformation.
